Frequently asked questions

Getting started

Is it worth importing my car from Singapore?

It depends on the car and your situation. If you are relocating and qualify for Transfer of Residence relief, the tax disappears and the cost is mostly shipping, testing and registration. Compare that with what the car would fetch in Singapore and what the same car costs in the UK. We will give you an honest view.

How do I get a quote?

Fill in the quote form with the car, where it is and why it is coming over. A member of our team writes an itemised quote, usually the same working day. There is no deposit and no obligation.

Do you only handle the shipping?

No. You can choose individual services or have us handle the whole import. We do collection, shipping, customs, modifications, testing and registration, all in-house, and we can pick up at any stage if the car is already on its way or already here.

The Singapore side

Do I need to deregister the car with the LTA?

Yes. The car must be deregistered before it leaves Singapore. It is an online process, and we send you a guide so you receive any rebates due.

Will I still get my PARF rebate?

If the car is under ten years old when it is deregistered, a PARF rebate is normally due whether it is scrapped or exported. Check your figure on OneMotoring before you set a date.

Which port does the car leave from?

It leaves through one of the Port of Singapore terminals at Pasir Panjang or Keppel, or through Jurong Port.

Shipping

How long does it take?

Roughly 4 to 8 weeks at sea, plus collection and loading in Singapore and customs, testing and registration here. We register through a dealer-level DVLA account, usually within 10 working days.

How is the car shipped?

In a container. Shared containers are our standard from Singapore and the most cost-effective option. A dedicated 20ft container is available if you want one to yourself.

Can I track it?

Yes. Your online portal shows where the car is in the process, with estimated sailing and arrival dates.

Customs, testing and registration

How much duty and VAT will I pay?

Normally 10% import duty on the value, then 20% VAT on the value, shipping and duty combined. Transfer of Residence relief can remove both if you are moving home. A car over 30 years old in original condition may pay no duty and 5% VAT.

Does it need an IVA test?

Under ten years old, yes. We test in our own private lane every week. Ten to forty years old needs an MOT instead, and over forty no MOT is required.

What modifications will it need?

Usually the speedometer, which has to show miles per hour, and sometimes lighting such as a rear fog lamp. Singapore drives on the left, so the headlights normally need nothing.

My car has already arrived in the UK. Can you help?

Yes. Choose "Already in the UK" on the quote form and we will quote for customs clearance, any modifications, testing and registration.
