The IVA test, explained for cars coming from Singapore

If your car is under ten years old, it needs an IVA test before the DVLA will register it. It's less daunting than it sounds.

Most cars coming from Singapore are young. COE economics see to that. That means most of them need an IVA test, and it’s the step people ask about most once the car has landed.

What IVA is

Individual Vehicle Approval is how a car that wasn’t approved for sale in the UK proves it meets UK safety and environmental standards. A car built for the Singapore market may be almost identical to its UK sister, or quite different, and the IVA test is where that’s settled one car at a time.

The rule of thumb is simple: under ten years old means IVA. Ten years and over means an MOT instead, and over forty years old, no MOT is required.

What gets checked

The test looks at the car against UK construction and use requirements. The areas that matter most on a Singapore car are:

  • Speedometer. It has to show miles per hour. Singapore cars read in kilometres per hour, so this is the most common job we do before a test.
  • Lighting. Singapore drives on the left, so the headlights already dip the right way. Other lighting, such as a rear fog lamp, is checked against UK rules.
  • Emissions. The car has to meet the standard for its age and type.
  • Glazing and structure. Windows, mirrors and the general build, checked for safety.

We inspect every car when it comes out of the container, so you’ll know the list before the test, not after it.

Why our own lane matters

We were the first privately owned testing site in the UK. IVA, MSVA and MOT tests all happen on our premises, and we test every week.

That matters more than it sounds. Elsewhere, an imported car is often converted in one place, then driven or trailered somewhere else to wait for a test slot. Here the car is converted, tested and registered without leaving the yard. Fewer handovers, fewer weeks lost waiting. That’s time and money saved for you.

If something isn’t right

It happens, usually over something small. We put it right and the car is retested. Because the lane is ours, a retest doesn’t mean going back to the end of someone else’s queue.

After the test

Once it passes, we register the car through our dealer-level DVLA account, usually within 10 working days. You get a V5C logbook and a UK registration number, we fit the plates, and the car is ready to collect or be delivered.
